Friends for a reason, a season, a lifetime
There are three kinds of friends: friends for a reason, for a season, and for a lifetime. When I first came across this saying I wondered why I haven't heard it before. I mentioned it to a couple of friends and none knew about it. Yet, Google seems pretty confident it exists. So, let's go with it!
At this point, we've lived long enough to have old friends, close friends, acquaintances, followers, and friend requests pending on Facebook. Our social circles can be just as hard to organise as our CD collection. Luckily, thinking that there are three kinds of friends: friends for a reason, for a season, and for a lifetime, cast some light on a situation where even privacy settings aren't making things easier.
To hear that some friends are in our life for a reason, in my opinion, sounds pretty superficial. But in all honesty, these are people you meet while doing any kind of activity that brings people together but you don't feel the desire to meet outside said activity frame. These friends for a reason will forever be introduced as: Linda from marketing, dude from the gym, the funny one from my theatre improv class.
Other friends, instead, are bound to stay for a season, pretty much literally. I would associate this kind of friends with the place I live, or study/work, in. These are friends you remember from summer camp, whom you shared a room with during University, or whom you met that summer and swore to see in person every year.
Before life made planning hard and travelling expensive.
Someone said that every September is like a fresh broken heart. I find myself asking: will I ever have fun again? Let me tell you, those memories of ‘season friends’ are sometimes better than real life. In fact, what we call life are those cold winter days. That's the time where you grow as a person and find your way, until the next escape.
Last, but not least, are the friends that will be with you for a lifetime.
Knowing each other since kindergarten, I’m afraid, doesn't mean you automatically fall into this category. Sometimes, the only reason you have childhood friends is because you used to live next to each other. I guess only time can set ‘lifetime friends’ apart.
