A perfume for the life you don't have
I am going to be completely honest with you. I feel like I am cheating in life when I go to a beauty department store and try on a perfume that is advertised for a type of person completely different from who I am. I walked in with the sole purpose to get some free samples. How could I possibly walk out smelling like Marilyn Monroe in her Chanel No.5? When it comes to perfumes, should we follow the rule: don't buy scents for the life you don't have?
There’s a scent for who say ‘yes’ to life, one for who wants to break the chains of society, one for romantic travellers, one for posh little-black-dress-wearing people. As for me, I've been proudly spraying 'Viva la Juicy' on a daily basis for years now. It’s not that I don’t try anything new, it’s just that what looks aesthetically pleasing in a bottle, turns out to smell awful on me. The alternative is a perfume that smells great but doesn’t feel right.
One day I received a generous sample of ‘Miss Dior’.
Shout out to the perfume lady who made my day!
I was extremely pleased with my free haul, and, as a matter of fact, the scent was also pleasant. Double score for me! Unfortunately, overthinking the whole situation as I usually do, I came to realise it’s not a perfume for me. When I smell that scent I visualise a casual chic young woman, with effortlessly styled hair and a job that requires her to be on schedule, knows what kind of bag to wear in any occasion, brunches and marble counter tops...
Now you understand why I can’t possibly wear that perfume without feeling guilty of cheating in life. Especially when the truth is that I walked into that department store just to get free skincare samples!
Activity that I perfected in time and now master with exceptional skills, if I say so myself.
It’s a lot like wearing a dress that’s ‘just not your style’, but it fits right, so you buy it. And this dress can be found in any girl’s wardrobe, hanging in there, dreaming of its moment to shine. A moment that would most likely be Paris in spring, pirouetting underneath the Eiffel Tower, Carrie Bradshaw style.
At this point every fashion blogger will tell you to stop buying clothes for the life you don’t have! Does this apply to perfumes as well? I guess I've simply never been a Miss Dior, frolicking around Champs-Élysées.
Now I wonder what went wrong in my life for me to feel a connection with Juicy Couture, or Victoria’s Secret. I thought I was a special snowflake!
Let me conclude by saying that I didn't buy the perfume, but I keep the sample in my bag. Just in case I end up getting my shit together, or end up in Paris. Whichever comes first!
