COVID-19 took away my free time
For those of you that are self-isolating, working from home, going out only for essential reasons, etc, I feel the need to let you know, we're halfway through May 2020.
It's currently a Wednesday, not that this sort of information is relevant in any way, shape, or form. I simply like to offer you a complete picture of what's happening
out there.
Some may argue that keeping track of time is useful only when you have social events to attend that require planning. Which is definitely not the case at this point.
If you're reading from the future, society is crippled by the effects of COVID-19, many Countries are slightly lifting restrictions but the pandemic remains, the virus remains. Is it a wise choice to lift restrictions? I say no.
I am also not an economy guru and not in a pinch, money-wise. If you asked anyone with a job that relies on people going out and socialising and buying things, then yeah, that looks like a good choice. Best for everyone? No. Just good for some.
I simply work in a hospital. Again, I like to offer a complete picture.
At the beginning of 2020, when the worst thing that happened was an extreme bush-fire combo in Australia, I promised myself I would indulge in a hobby and, for the first time, really follow through with it. My new year's resolution was to practice hand-lettering at least 10 minutes per day, every day.
Easy, I know.
Well, that has not happened since February. Remember when I said I worked in a hospital? That's long hours and zero energy (and daylight) before I leave, or by the time I get home. I literally have no time even for my new-year resolution.
The only thing I kept up with, other than the Kardashians, is taking my vitamins. Now I have two stashes of magic pills I take daily, after lunch and dinner, that I strongly believe are keeping me healthy at this point.
And that's just physically healthy. For mental health, well, that's a whole other blog post.
Talking about time for activities, the first hobby to go was the gym. The boyfriend and I paused our membership mid-February in a wishful attempt to 'let the virus pass'. Cut to now, halfway through the year and gyms are still closed.
I also promised I would drink more water. I even installed a little reminder app on my work computers so that every 10 minutes it will 'ding' softly and remind me to drink some water.
That 'ding' is never visible under the hundreds of alerts I receive daily on my monitor and it is likely to happen in the middle of a phone call, while typing an urgent email, or during a video-call. I don't have time to drink water.
On a side-note: if you had invested in ZOOM and other video-call platforms, good for you! At this point, don't touch your investments. Don't even look at them. Just leave them be and consider this a winter lethargy for all aspects of life.
On the plus side, my camera-ready makeup has stepped up a lot! Glowy bronzer and eyebrows on fleek are all I need. Coincidentally, that's also all I have time for.
All my colourful eyeshadows and a plethora of face-products are sitting in a drawer. Unused, even on weekends, because there's nowhere to go.
Actually, I did put on a fancy eye look last weekend, just to drive to the takeaway restaurant. It was good for my mental health, thanks for asking.
Every other day, when I come home from work, I have no time to indulge in anything longer than an episode of the American Office. That makes me feel bad because, since coming back from Italy I have been re-admitted into the movie-night club.
What's the movie-night club? Why it is only the most exclusive group of girls from my mountain town. Every 5-ish years we embark in a 30-day movie challenge, and each nominates their favourite movie for each daily category. It's usually 6 of us, so we end up with a long list of movies to watch weekly.
Yeah, I have no time for that anymore.
Luckily, I took part in 30-day song challenges with my friends, which are more manageable, and I can even listen to a few songs each day!
Yeah, I have time for music.
April shall be known as the month of music and vitamins. Let's see what Winter brings.
I hope it's time.
