COVID-19 how not to waste a crisis

It feels like, in this COVID-19 world, society is divided into three factions: ‘This lockdown is killing me’, ‘I never want to leave’, and my personal favourite: ‘What lockdown?’.

do not waste a good crisis

Despite the difference in lifestyle, I want to believe there is a common silver lining that unifies all of these types, and it’s the hope to turn this crisis into something positive and constructive.

If you're thinking of taking on new hobbies, or all of those new baking disciples, please... You know me better than that. I wouldn't bring up such trivial information.

I am a serious blogger.

hah!

Anyway, during one of my workplace newly introduced live-forums, our CEO said something strikingly interesting:

Never let a good crisis go to waste.

I was ready to call her a legend and to take credit for this perfect image that sums up the silver lining we’ve all been looking for.

Turns out, Winston Churchill said it about 80 years ago.

Clearly, the CEO meant to highlight the new resources to face social distancing, such as the aforementioned live-forums, and this great program an excellent team of nerdy witches has implemented called Telehealth.

However, what those words made me think of, was the waste of money and feeling of 'too much stuff' I used to experience through my pre COVID-19 fast shopping habits.

Welcome to my Ted Talk:

The lack of instant gratification is making me more aware of the way I spend. Ironically, whenever I needed to wait, be it for a friend or a bus, I would feel triggered to purchase something. And now that I am literally waiting for life to pick up its usual pace, I am holding onto my money.

Also, I am saying 'pick up its usual pace' but for me is more of a 'slow down'.

So, what I noticed, other than my savings increasing, is that I don't miss the feeling of shopping for new things. What gives me that tingly feeling is actually using up the stuff I've previously bought.

Here I am, using skincare products that I was saving up as treasured possessions for some unknown reason, and enjoying it almost as much as I did walking out of the store with my crisp shopping bag of brand new goodies.

Finally, self-care can really feel good without having to look good on Instagram!

I mentioned skincare products, but you should check out my tea cabinet! I have teas that I've been saving for years! And what for? They're not
even a treat anymore. My tastebuds must have changed because finishing those teas felt like a chore. Now I have new teas that I look forward sipping and enjoying, knowing that the earlier I am done with these, the earlier I can buy new ones.

It's a treat-chain!

Also, did I mention that I am actually using my stationery?

I know! And not for anything special, like I've always thought I would. I am using my fancy notebooks daily, for random notes at work, and it's making me really happy.

Another thing that's making me happy, other than bouji skincare, yummy teas, and colourful pens, is that all of those meetings that could have been an email, now truly are an email or a video-call. Multi-tasking at its finest, we can attend a meeting while still finding the time to answer that long-winded email we had sitting in our drafts.

All the while looking very interested and involved.

To conclude: to all the bakers, the meditative type, the creative, the introverts, the extroverts, the business-on-the-top pajamas-on-the-bottom, the front line workers, the no-work-at-all…

to all of us, let’s not waste a good crisis.
