Four seasons in a day. Welcome to Melbourne
Did you think I was done blabbering about my Italian holiday? Buckle up! I'm taking you for another ride through space and time.
It all started with me packing for my autumn trip back home. I knew a light jacket was required for warmth purposes, and that’s about it. So I packed one jacket and called it a day.
Just kidding, I did not pack a jacket, I had one already in Italy so I didn’t bother.
You see, in Europe, seasons serve a purpose. Some days it’s raining and you might need an umbrella, but you won’t need to jump between coats and t-shirts within a limited timeframe. For my trip, the options were: leather jacket and sunglasses OR leather jacket and umbrella; leather jacket and t-shirt during the day, leather jacket and long sleeves at night.
Such shielded upbringing.
Cut to Melbourne, when they say ‘for seasons in a day’ they are not kidding. Every sartorial option needs to be taken into serious consideration at any given time. Recently I have learned that rain-less thunderstorms are a thing, that wind can kill people, and that the sun is different down under.
To give you an example, the typical array of tools any Melbournian should always carry consists of:
SPF lotion
Umbrella
Sunnies
Jacket
T-shirt
Reusable coffee cup
Reusable bottle
Hand sanitiser
Pawpaw lip balm
Spray to dry up a runny nose
Spray to clear a stuffy nose
Optional: cap, flip-flops, scarf, hair tie
You might have read ‘any given time’ and ‘always’ and thought I was exaggerating. No. I meant always at any given time.
To give you an idea, in my mountain hometown, we have a few seasonal things we should carry with us and those things are:
Plastic sandals to go into the lake because pebbles hurt, for summer
Tissues, for autumn
Windscreen ice scraper, for winter
Mosquito repellent, for spring
Bonus objects: a Swiss knife and a map
One doesn’t even need to carry a bag! Just chuck your phone and keys in your pockets and you’re good to go!
I was watching a video where a Youtuber was describing the struggle of living in Washington State with its four seasons, as opposed to those Californian weaklings, and how that affects her skincare routine throughout the year according to season and temperature.
This is me putting on my Willy Wonka hat, leaning to the side, and asking to keep telling me about the challenge of changing lifestyle every 3 months.
