My battery exploded, eventually

Only two things are certain in life: every time I go to the hairdresser it will rain and all my laptops will last three years.

And death, whatever.

Exploding battery

It doesn’t matter how much time I spend using said laptop, how often I switch it off wrong, if I get any blue screen of death, or if I have so many files on it that even a click takes several minutes to process: all laptops I have had in my whole life, lasted about three years.

The one currently sitting on my desk and which I have used the least, decided to surprise me with a swollen and ripe battery ready to explode.

My faith in laptops has decreased through my experience and the last thing I want is to throw away a lot of money for something that will last me a couple of years.

Seriously, the hassle of transferring all my files and the stress of having all my passwords potentially forgotten in the internet shift is the last thing I want.

And every new keyboard feels so foreign and uncharted, like it’s not the exact same thing I’ve been typing on for my whole life.

Be prepared for typo town!

What’s the point in spending money for something that I barely use since I have a job? Of course, The Sims is a very valid reason, but is it $700 valid?

I was already sighing and rolling my eyes at the thought of going through all this a fifth time, when the boyfriend presented the situation under a new and completely unexpected light.

You better be sitting down because this is a ground-breaking theory.

He argues that all my laptops have been lasting me just a few years, because I have always spent such a small amount of money on them.

Small amount of money? The current laptop, at $780, was a record investment for me. I haven’t spent so much money for an object, ever!

The boyfriend looks at me. Long pause.

Other than the sofa…

He says it’s about time I accept the fact I am an adulting individual with a full time job, and the stability and option to buy a laptop that adheres to a certain quality standard and will last me longer than what I am used to.

Too long didn’t read: not a student anymore, buy a good laptop!

All of this was way too overwhelming for me to process and my internal battery exploded just like my laptop’s. My brain gave me the blue screen of death and I started crying.

This time, I did not make it to the shower, so the boyfriend had to accept the fact that this conversation was too much for my emotional RAM. He also offered to select a good laptop that fits my The Sims needs and to find a good deal so I won’t need to worry about anything during the process.

The typos will still happen, however I am low-key looking forward the fun part of having a new laptop: the excitement of selecting a new screensaver, lock screen, desktop, colours…
