The new trend nobody is talking about: layering

You know what they say, cold hands - warm heart? I am a cold creature. More like cold hands - cold feet. Unsurprisingly, cold is the most frequently used adjective to describe my life journey.

layering for wintertime

Does it snow in your village in Italy?

Yes. Yes, it does snow.

How was it studying in England?

Cold. It snowed from October to April.

Your time in Bologna?

We were poor students living on pasta and canned tuna, who kept heating always below 18.

Australia, land of kangaroos and g'daymate!

Melbourne, city of many seasons in a day, but those rarely include summer time.

Given such premises, you would guess I have learned to face cold weather and came to terms with my shivers. Better yet: that I have learned to wear warm clothes.

Think again.

I have learned very little from wintertime in all hemispheres and I would like to share what I've learned with you.

On a side note, I just realised it's officially summer in most countries but it's winter down under, if the topic bothers you, just bookmark this article for later. Imagine girly poses and giggles because #influenzer

In Bologna I have learned that it's perfectly acceptable to wear two scarves at the same time. Also, that fitting your pyjama pants inside your socks, other than being extremely entertaining for my mum who laughed for thirty minutes straight at my flatmates, keeps the warmth inside, and the cold away from your shins.

Our motto shall be: Lest not forget our calves!

This trick is recommendable only as a home look, because of the evident similarities with 1940s ranked Germans. Definitely warmer and comfier, although much less stylish. Hugo Boss would never launch a collection for warmth.

My fondest memory of England, probably the only one I have left in me that was not compromised by alcohol, is layering nylons not just to go out, but underneath my pyjama.

I am definitely starting to see a trend with my tips here.

I wish I knew this was possible and effective when I was in Bologna, frolicking through fields of dust in our student apartment with our pants tucked into ugly mismatched socks.

Extra tip, because I care about your calves: don't throw away ripped skin coloured nylons, when layered underneath fashion nylons or stockings, nobody could tell they're even there!

Sneaky warmth.

You're welcome.

During these past months, I have noticed my manager looking fierce in her soft leather jackets while in the office. Mind you, it is winter here and she definitely came to work wearing a big winter coat.

How?

So, once, I tried to use a thin jacket instead of one of my beloved pastel coloured cardigans and, lo and behold! It works!

You get warmth while inside, and warmth while outside, you get the cool factor of wearing a jacket inside, plus you get the ability to remove it and look casual when the heater is finally on.

Don't get me started on the never-ending battle of heating versus air conditioning in offices.

If there's a bottom line to this article it would be:

layer.
