Your life in chapter titles
I was scrolling through Tumblr, as one tentatively does on public transport, trying not to raise too many questioning looks, when, between an overexposed photo and a low saturation one, I found a post that said:
'Post your age and the title of your chapter'
There is a chance that it was merely referring to the title of an actual chapter you were reading, but this is Tumblr and we are more creative than that.
I felt the idea immediately resonate within.
This is my jam.
Then, I realised I have been doing something extremely similar to get myself through the hardest years of my life. I’m talking age 16 all the way through 26. However, the thing I’ve never considered during that time was to title my chapter while living it.
That doesn’t even sound similar, but I swear it is!
I was tactically assigning a title to the astronomical year in order to keep my path through life and not lose myself and my values and what I felt was a priority. Some call it ‘New year’s resolution’, but we’re better than that.
Think of early-2010s LookBook post titles: a bit edgy, cryptic, maybe an indie song title, a movie quote.
Once, I was slowly breaking up with my boyfriend at the time, and I knew I had to get back my style, sense of humour, pride, and a whole series of things that I admittedly had lost in that relationship. So, I titled the year ‘Be a cherry’ which, clearly, made sense only to me. Nonetheless, I knew what had to be done and that title, much like a mantra, kept me to my word.
Most recently, I titled a year ‘Let’s hunt some orc’, some of you may even have been around for that blog post! Let’s reminisce together.
Deep Sigh.
To think I was ready to face ‘adulting’ in 2014. Well, props to me for the initiative, but look at me, four years later: one orc done (the job and morning alarm part) but more to go (normal people looking for a normal home, anyone?).
So, now that all of that has already happened, it would be fun to actually title my life chapters in a more precise way according to what did happen, and not based on wishful thinking.
Chapter 16: I wish there was Hot Topic in Italy
Chapter 18: I'll follow my heart and study philosophy
Chapter 19: Kawaii Baby-chan desu :3
Chapter 22: My mother spiked my drink
Chapter 24: Some call this post-Erasmus depression
Chapter 24: Pack that suitcase and go
Chapter 24: Trying to do the adulting thing
